After several years of intensive work to produce high-quality birch seeds, Södra has now harvested a large amount of birch seeds in its greenhouse orchard in Falkenberg. The seeds will be used to breed improved birch seedlings with favourable traits, which will promote the growth and diversity of family forestry.

All papers sourced by UPM Raflatac, whether used as a face paper or a release liner in its labeling materials, are now certified under a credible third-party forest certification scheme. Having all papers certified is one of UPM Raflatac’s 2030 responsible sourcing and climate targets, which was now achieved six years ahead of time.

UPM confirmed that UPM Pulp, UPM Timber, UPM Biofuels and the Lappeenranta biorefinery can implement a total of 90 days from 1 January to 30 June this year.  In the Communication Papers division, layoffs can be implemented from 1 March to 31 August. This applies to all for UPM’s pulp mills, sawmills and printing and writing paper mills in Finland. Temporary layoffs can be imposed individually and at intervals.

Italy’s recycled board manufacturer RDM Group mulls definitive closure of the company’s Villa Santa Lucia mill in Italy. Yesterday, the group informed the representatives of the trade unions that it would initiate the procedure to wind up production activities at the Villa Santa Lucia plant with the consequent dismissal of 163 employees.

The knock-on effects of the conflict in the Middle East are now being felt on the European recovered paper market.

Stora Enso is going to enter into negotiations on possible temporary layoffs at the Anjalankoski mills industrial complex in southern Finland. The statutory negotations cover a layoff period of a maximum of 90 days in 2024 and involve the entire staff of the Anjalankoski mills. The talks will start on 15 January and are estimated to last two weeks.

“This is an important acquisition, allowing us to immediately meet the growing demand, which saw a significant upturn in 2023. We are acquiring a technologically advanced plant that further improves our geographic coverage and creates the conditions to strengthen and sustain growth in our main market,” said Luigi Lazzareschi, CEO of Sofidel.

The paper manufacturing group, best known in Italy and Europe for its Regina brand, has acquired from ST Paper a paper mill in Duluth, in Minnesota, in the Upper Midwest.
